Developed countries account for a major share of exports of knowledge-based products, particularly knowledge-based pharmaceuticals, due to their advanced technological infrastructure and integrated innovation systems. Despite having a comparative advantage and considerable capacity in pharmaceutical production—especially in high-tech and biotechnology-based products—Iran has not yet achieved export performance commensurate with its production potential. One of the main reasons for this gap is the lack of an integrated competitive intelligence model to manage and promote pharmaceutical exports. Accordingly, this study aimed to design a competitive intelligence framework for exporters engaged. A mixed-methods research design was employed. In the qualitative phase, relevant studies were first identified and systematically reviewed using appropriate software and scientific procedures. Next, adopting a phenomenological approach, the required data were collected through semi-structured interviews with managers involved in pharmaceutical export and marketing. Sampling was conducted using purposive and snowball techniques, and nine valid interviews were selected for analysis. The qualitative data were analyzed through open, axial, and selective coding. The credibility of the research was confirmed through construct, internal, interpretive, and descriptive validity. In the quantitative phase, the qualitative findings were translated into a matrix questionnaire and entered into analysis. Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) was then used to identify and level the relationships among the core elements of export intelligence. Finally, one of the results was tested and confirmed using an action research method. The findings indicated that export intelligence comprises six main dimensions and twenty-one components, with cognitive capabilities and supporting factors—such as government support—being the most significant.
